Was given to me by the late Rosemary Butcher whist we were working in Berlin in 2015. "Tanz im August” I had composed sound for a dance she had choreographed. She bought me the pencil so I could make notes. It’s probably my favourite pencil!
Despite endlessly always trying to find the perfect pen to write with, I always come back to a biro. Something about the glide and the lack of inky trails can’t be topped. It must be blue. You can buy one for me.

Grandmother Shirley’s pen
2024 was a hard year. Part way through, City Gallery were forced to close our doors to the public in response to the increasing number of disruptions caused by construction in Civic Square.
In response to the sudden changes, we scrambled to reimagine our planned exhibitions and events with the help of our colleagues at The Dowse, Te Papa, and The National Library of New Zealand, who generously changed their schedules to accommodate us.
While the situation is still ongoing, we will continue to exhibit at National Library in 2025-2026, until we can return to our building. So, it seems fitting that I should send a pencil from City Gallery, to you, all the way in Cambridge, while we feel so far away, and unmoored from home.
I used to love this pen and wrote almost exclusively with it for several years until I switched to a slightly sturdier fountain pen. You can see how much I used it from the teethmarks on the end … There is something so beautiful, delicate, organic about fountain pens. Good Luck! Lia PS Jeff my boyfriend, is a mathematician and said that 64 = 2x2x2x2x2x2

I sent ‘delegations’ out to Mill Rd Library and the Gonville Hotel for pens that reflected our meeting and life-changing + affirming impact on me then …. Sadly no joy. So, please find enclosed my favourite colour in celebration of you !
I cant remember exactly where it came from. I didn’t buy it, it was left in a studio in one of my teaching jobs. I just couldn’t resist it. One could say it was a stolen object. ( this is not part of my every day habits!) I guess it's the colour my favourite colour: blue. I have done a lot of blue drawings ink, pen, paints,… so an extra blue drawing tool is always welcome. But this particular pencil has a very special shape in my view: it’s chunky, it’s faceted, it has body and weight. It also reminds me of the kind of pencil my father used to have in his drawer, his wasn’t coloured , he used it when doing DIY. I guess it resonates with my childhood.
The pen is my favourite sort of all purpose pen, for writing and doing group drawing exercises, as it moves in the hand/ flows easily and can be seen well, enough contrast. There's something about your project which incorporates so many implements, I wanted my offer to help join things up without making itself conspicuous...!
It’s my Manchester United membership gift pen from this season. One could say that this season has very much been about ‘Admitting the Possibilities of Error’ !!

I had one of these when I was about 6 years old - it was magic - all the different colours!
I was thinking about what colour I think of when I think of you and thought of many, including the green plus the green chrome oxide was central to some glazes I was trying to make before Christmas, hoping for a green and I got all sorts of colours before I eventually got green.

My Grandfather Robert Martin’s Pen. My grandfather was a very special adult for me. I always remember him sitting at his desk doing his “strap collection” hobby and using this pen to write little notes in the margins of his Stamp Albums. I would always be interested and ask him what he was doing or to tell me a funny story. He would always respond with a funny story or Limerick poem or ditty. Like this :
The boy stood on the burning deck picking his nose like mad, he rolled them up into little balls and flicked them at his Dad.
I miss him. I inherited this pen when he passed away and only use it very occasionally. It’s a link with the past.
